World Mental Health Day

October 2023 by Adriana Gil-Wilkerson, Ph.D., LMFT-Supervisor

On October 10, every year, we pause to acknowledge that Mental Health is part of all people's identities. Some people have suffered setbacks and trauma in their life and that has impacted their wellbeing, affecting their mental health. On this day we acknowledge that all humans have the capacity for wellbeing but the vulnerability to be impacted by their environment and/or their physiology. Whether you choose to navigate life's challenges alone or with support, whether you have support or not, the World Health Organization (WHO) reminds us that Mental Health is a universal human right.

On this one day of the year, the WHO invites us to explore how we, each and every human, have a right to access the highest quality mental health care available. Please watch and share this video from the WHO, featuring their Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus who calls on all countries to acknowledge mental health as a human right, ending with, "there is no health without mental health."

Mental health is dependent on relationships and the communication needed to maintain them-as well as on each person's access to learning about how to create strategies to support changes that may potentially resolve challenges. Many people have access to caring support in their communities and many do not. If you have been struggling with mental health challenges or if you know someone who has, we hope you can take this reminder as an opportunity to reach out and remind someone to seek support. At Co-Created Spaces: Therapy, we understand that mental health care can be expensive, each of our therapists have worked or continue to work in community mental health to also be available for clients who are not able to work with us in our private practice. We either volunteer or have worked at other organizations to give back to our communities, while we may not be able to discount our rates, we can support you in finding affordable care in the general Houston area (in person or via telehealth).  If you are looking for services and need to find resources that offer care at a lower cost, below are some resources in our community that offer mental health services on a sliding scale basis:
